Oct. 31, 2015 (Halloween Night)
“The true secret to seeking the unknown is in the looking, not the finding. The journey is what matters.” – Joshua Gates (Explorer & Archaeologist)
On October 31st Beth and I met up in north central Indiana for what else, but a haunted tour of the historic Underground Railroad town of Westfield, Indiana. The weather was almost what you would expect it to be for a ghostly adventure. Temperatures in the upper 40’s, cloudy, rainy, and dark. Nonetheless, armed with coats, umbrella’s, flashlights, and cameras we headed out to learn about the haunted past of this quiet Midwest town and to see if we could have an experience of our own on a night that the dead come back to life.
Our first stop was downtown Westfield where our tour guide Nicole Kobrowski from Unseen Press talked about the founders of Westfield, the original buildings, and the experiences people have had in said buildings. Many reports of ghostly apparitions, things being moved, and people being touched have been reported, even to the point of a reporter from a local television station being pushed down stairs years ago.
As we continued down the road we passed multiple places, learning about slaves making narrow escapes from their “masters” via the Underground Railroad and the spirits of those who still roam the downtown area's historical buildings.
Continuing out of Westfield we came to what is the current city hall building where people have reported seeing the ghost of a tall mustachioed man in the windows, being touched, and even scratched. While we took multiple pictures and scanned with infrared cameras, nothing was to be seen on this Halloween night.
Throughout the night we passed several places that had stories of past historical events and hauntings, but perhaps none more intriguing that the last stop at Anti-Slavery Friends Cemetery near Asa Bales and Hadley Park. Here, there are many stories of ghostly sightings, sounds, and presences. However, as we were told the stories from the distant, and not so distant past, neither Beth nor I sensed anything out of the ordinary.
Once we exited the cemetery it was a short walk back to the vehicle where nothing much happened. So, while we have no experiences of our own, the experiences of those who came through that area hundreds of years ago still echo in local stories, legends, and lore. Thus, making for at least some reason to believe in what some think unbelievable.
