Haunted Metamora, IN

“We do not fear the unknown, we fear what we think we know about the unknown” – Teal Swan

Mid-November in Indiana, for anyone who lives here knows the weather can be unpredictable at best with wild mood swings from mother nature. When it was still in the 60’s to start the month, we decided to plan another paranormal investigation in the small town of Metamora, Indiana. Little did we know, two weeks later we would be out on the coldest night of the season looking for things that go bump in the night, but we will get to that in just a little bit.

For those of you who are not familiar with the town, Metamora, Indiana is a tiny little historical town nestled in the White River valley in southern Indiana. This town used to be a booming little place when it was settled in 1838 as it was a prominent stop along the Whitewater Canal. However, with the introduction of locomotive the canal became the less preferred way to ship goods across the state and region. Currently Metamora is a historical town with only 188 year-round residents. However, it is the only place in the with a still operating water-powered grist mill and features the only wooden aqueduct left in the United States! The canal is now used for tourism purposes which is the town's primary source of revenue.

This little town steeped in so much history looked to provide a unique opportunity for a paranormal investigation, so after doing some research we found some stories that would support our thoughts. So we packed up and headed southeast to Metamora.

Beth and I arrived well after dark meeting the two other investigators there (Stephanie and Trenton). We parked, got out, and loaded our packs up to investigate. However, before we could even take one step away from the vehicles both Stephanie and Beth said they saw a shadow figure run across a building. Instantly thinking they had seen one of the resident ducks that outnumber the townspeople about 3-1, I just shrugged it off. However, as I turned to the center of town I quickly became a believer as a full-blown shadow figure quickly ran across the forward-facing walls in the center of town. In disbelief, we quickly got our equipment out and began the investigation.

Over the next 45 minutes to hour Beth and I split up from the rest of the team, going our own way to find what had caused the unexplained shadows. We walked up and down the train tracks that run desolately through the middle of town. As we did, even more unexplained shadows occurred on houses and garages.

After a while of seeing nothing happening we decided to go back to the front of the store where I saw the shadow figure. We asked several questions with no response. However, after asking “Is there anyone here?”. We had a very clear disembodied voice on the recorder that said “Hello”.

Over the next several hours we all continued to investigate, but all activity seemed to come to an end after that one EVP. While we all had our own experiences seeing shadows, hearing voices, and feeling other presences with us, no other evidence was caught on camera or recorder.

If you’re ever down in southeastern Indiana make sure to stop by the little town of Metamora, it is like stepping back into the 1800’s. Perhaps while you are there you can meet the residents from that era, the ones that may very well outnumber the residents of the current one.
